CE alum and artist DaFu Yu exhibits at MOCA; appears in Anthology!

CE Alum and artist DaFu Yu recently drew a story in the Secret Identites, Volume 2: Shattered anthology.

Secret Identities is an Asian American superhero comic anthology done by asian creators, including fellow CE alum and writer Amy Chu.

The book is a follow-up to the earlier groundbreaking anthology using the comic format “to upend, re-envision, re-imagine – to shatter – the distorted and negative images that have shadowed Asian Americans since the earliest days of arrival in this country.”

In addition to DaFu and Amy, the anthology includes the work of: Alice Meichi Li, Eric Kim, GB Tran, Jeremy Arambulo, Jerry Ma, Johann Choi, Kripa Joshi, Louie Chin, Robin Ha, Saumin Patel, Jamie Noguchi, Ming Doyle, Jef Castro, Tak Toyoshima, and Glenn Urieta.

The Museum of Chinese in America (MOCA) will also be exhibiting some of DaFu's artwork as part of the Alt.Comics: Asian American Artists Reinvent the Comic Book exhibition, on view from September 27, 2012 through February 24, 2013, featuring art from the anthology.

Alt.Comics showcases the efforts of Asian American artists to establish a new and authentic identity by subverting stereotypes and juxtaposing disparate images. The exhibition focuses on alternative and independent comic spaces, particularly in the hubs of San Francisco and New York, which produced many of the most prominent artists in the independent scene. The exhibition features work by DaFu as well as Gene Luen Yang, Derek Kirk Kim, Thien Pham, Lark Pien, Jason Shiga, GB Tran, Jerry Ma, Larry Hama, Alex Joon Kim, and Christine Norrie.

MOCA is a nonprofit educational and cultural institution that presents the living history, heritage, culture and diverse experiences of Chinese Americans through exhibitions, educational services and public programs.

"The Ride" -- A New Anthology from Comics Experience Alums!

The latest anthology created by Comics Experience writing alums is now available!

Comics Experience: The Ride is a 24-page comic book anthology containing both full color and black and white stories written during the January 2012 Introduction to Comic Book Writing course.

In the past, a number of Comics Experience classes have teamed up to produce class anthologies after their course ended.

We're happy to have our January 2012 alums joining those ranks!

The genres in The Ride include sci-fi, slice of life, Western, and even a trip to heaven.

The book also contains a Foreword by former Marvel and IDW Editor (and CE founder) Andy Schmidt.

The Ride may be ordered via IndyPlanet.

The writers -- now all CE alums! -- are Kerith Hopper, Patrick McHugh, Alex Wilson, and Eric Wilder.

One of the stories features art by CE alum Jorge Donis as well as lettering by CE alum Kevin Lintz.

Other artists contributing include Sean Carner, Mario Boon, and Tim Hall.

Shakespeare Shaken Anthology Features FOUR Comics Experience Alums!

Shakespeare Shaken, published by Red Stylo Media, is a comic anthology of original graphic works (including short comic stories, short series and vignettes) inspired by the plays, poetry and life of William Shakespeare.

The full-color trade paperback contains over 200 pages and features work from over thirty comic artists and writers, including four Comics Experience alums -- Amber Love, Rich Douek, Shaun Noel, and Marta Tanrikulu!

Each contributor was challenged to take a favorite character or setting from Shakespeare's revered plays or poetry, shake 'em up, and create new works.

With a Foreword by Dirk Manning, creator of Nightmare World, and including short series by 2012 Eisner-nominee Jeremy Whitley (Princeless), Shakespeare Shaken also includes the following stories from Comics Experience alums:

No. 130: For Love, story by Amber Love and Kristen McHugh, art by Jhazmine Ruiz, tells a tragic tale inspired by Shakespeare's Sonnet 130 of a man given the chance to be consort to a goddess if only he will agree to renounce his mortal mate.

In All Our Yesterdays, story by Richard Douek, with art by Jason Strutz, the Star Emperor of Man, Mac Bethad, is on the verge of losing his life and empire to rebel forces when his ship's console is inhabited by sentient artificial intelligence and offers a final solution.

In The Play Is the Thing, by Shaun Noel, with art by Andre Frattino, it's the Sonnets versus the Globes for the Championship, in an all-ages basketball mash-up of characters and plot-twists from William Shakespeare's most famous plays.

In Falstaff’s Arena, by Marta Tanrikulu, art by Michael Reisner, the story continues the tradition of Shakespeare and men in tights, borrowing characters from "Henry IV," tumbled together with Mexican wrestling.

Indie Comics Horror #1 Features Six Comics Experience Alums and Workshop Members!

Indie Comics Horror #1, the anthology series from Aazurn Publishing, will include four stories written by Comics Experience alums and Creators Workshop members. And two of the stories are illustrated and lettered by CE folks as well!

Indie Comics Horror is a 48-page black and white comic book featuring six complete stories in this issue.

The first issue is now being solicited for pre-order on page 228 of the September 2012 issue of Diamond PREVIEWS and may be ordered via your local comic shop. (PREVIEWS Order Code: SEP120728)

Indie Comics Magazine #6, the anthology series from Aazurn Publishing, hit comic shops this week and features five stories by Comics Experience alums and Creators Workshop members!

CE Alums Rich Douek & Paul Allor Write for Oxymoron Hardcover!

Oxymoron is the Kickstarter-funded new graphic novel from ComixTribe, collecting stories about a supervillain psychopath obsessed with contradiction.

And this 100-page hardcover will include stories written by TWO Comics Experience alums and Creators Workshop members: Rich Douek and Paul Allor!

The book, debuting in October at New York Comic Con, also features stories by up-and-coming writers and artists, including Jason Ciaramella (The Cape, Godzilla), Joe Mulvey (Scam), Mark Poulton (Avengelyne, Savage Hawkman), and more, and is edited by ComixTribe publisher Tyler James.

Rich Douek's story in the Oxymoron hardcover, with art by Rafer Roberts (Plastic Farm), is "Act Naturally."

"Act Naturally" -- The Royal Shakespeare Touring Company's debut of Romeo and Juliet at Swanstown's prestigious Woodmire Hall is taken under the Oxymoron's psychotic direction - that is, until superhero Red shows up. But, is she just playing her part in Oxy's latest tragic comedy?

Rich is also the creator/writer behind the forthcoming miniseries Gutter Magic, which tells a tale of sword, sorcery and sixguns in an alternate history where a magic-fueled World War II drove the world to the brink of apocalypse. Rich recently released a trailer promoting the planned five issue miniseries, with art by Brett Barkley, colors by CE alum Donna Gregory, and edits by CE staff member Paul Allor!

Paul Allor's story in the Oxymoron hardcover, with art by Aaron Houston (Clockwork), is "Quiet Riot."

"Quiet Riot" -- The Oxymoron holds all of Swanstown hostage in terrifying silence, as one cop struggles to stop the madman before her city burns to the ground.

Paul will also be writing Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Micro-Series #8 featuring Fugitoid from IDW, and is the author of the Clockwork anthology, which contained 12 original stories on cross-genre characters such as space-faring gorilla pirates, heart-broken robots, a beautiful gunfighter, and even a man on death row. Paul also works as a comics editor on upcoming or released projects such as Girls' Night Out, Gutter Magic, Deluge, and Rex, Zombie Killer

CE Alum Paul Allor's "Warlord" Published in "Barsowia."

The Barsowia anthology recently featured a story written by CE alum and Book Club Manager Paul Allor with illustrations by JM Ken Niimura (I Kill Giants, Amazing Spider-Man).

Barsowia is a Galician-language anthology, published in Spain.

"Barsowia has published the work of some extraordinary comics creators over the years," Paul said. "We're quite honorored to be included among their ranks."

The story reprinted in Barsowia is "Warlord," a part of the Clockwork anthology. You can read the English-language version online at www.clockworkcomic.com.

The Clockwork anthology contained 12 original stories on cross-genre characters such as space-faring gorilla pirates, heart-broken robots, a beautiful gunfighter, and even a man on death row.

Clockwork contained artwork by Comics Experience art alums and workshop members Ken Frederick and Carl Peterson, alongside well-known artists including Brett Weldele (Surrogates) and Nikki Cook (Memoir), as well as JM Ken Niimura.

It was also recently announced that Paul will be writing Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Micro-Series #8 featuring Fugitoid. Paul's story will introduce the popular Fugitoid character into IDW's turtles continuity.

In addition to writing, Paul works as a comics editor on upcoming or released projects such as Girls' Night Out, Gutter Magic, Deluge, and Rex, Zombie Killer

COMMUNITY NEWS: CE Alum Joe Sergi Edits and Contributes to Iconic II Anthology!

The recently released ComicBook Artists' Guild (CAG) anthology, Iconic II was edited by CE alum and Workshop member Joe Sergi. Joe also contributed two stories to the anthology.

The Iconic anthology series takes well-known public domain characters, and twists and turns them in new and interesting ways. For example, Joe's story contribution, Cinderfella, is a gender-bending take on the classic Cinderella fairy tale. Joe's other story in the anthology is called The Impossible Dream, based on the Don Quixote character.

The Iconic II anthology is a 192-page, 6x9 inch paperback, available for $9.99 right here. The book also includes a Foreword by Comics Experience founder Andy Schmidt.

Joe is a graduate of several Comics Experience classes, including both the inaugural online Introduction to Comic Book Writing course in 2009, as well as the very first Editing and Project Management course last year.

Joe writes both prose (Sky Girl and the Superheroic Legacy) and comics (Great Zombies in History, Armed & Fabulous, and the forthcoming Aliens Among Us from Elevator Pitch Press).

Joe was also selected as a semi-finalist in the Who Wants To Create A Superheroine contest sponsored by the Shadowline Imprint of Image Comics, and received the 2010 Haller Award for Best Writer from the ComicBook Artist' Guild at the 2010 New York ComicCon.

COMMUNITY NEWS: Genesis -- A New Anthology from Comics Experience Alums!

The latest anthology created by Comics Experience writing alums is now available!

Tales from the Comics Experience: Genesis is a 54-page, black and white trade paperback anthology that contains stories written during the September 2011 Intro to Comic Book Writing course.

In the past, a number of Comics Experience classes have teamed up to produce class anthologies after their course ended, and we're happy to have our September 2011 alums joining those ranks!

The stories in Genesis contain adventure, romance, and betrayal, and run the gamut from the brutalities of war to the fringes of space and beyond. The book also contains a Foreword by former Marvel and IDW Editor (and CE founder) Andy Schmidt.

The book may be ordered via IndyPlanet.

The writers -- now all CE alums! -- are Ivan Antonio, Tracie Burch, Matt Dansie, Allen Edger, Philip Jung, Chris Mosby, Keith Salmon, and G. Von Stoddard.

The cover and two interior stories are by CE art alum DaFu Yu.

More exciting news from Comics Experience alumni and Creators Workshop members!

Artist and Comics Experience alum Joe Lalich had a story published just last week in DC Comics' Batman 80-Page Giant 2011 #1!

"One Lock, Many Keys" is a ten-page story telling the tale of a child with developmental disabilities and his encounter with Batman and Solomon Grundy.

The story was written by Joe Caramagna, with pencils by Joe Lalich, inks by Jack Purcell, and colors by Will Quintana.

Batman 80-Page Giant 2011 is still on the stands right now at your local comic shop!

Comics Experience alums from last fall's Introduction to Comic Book Writing class have published an anthology of their stories from the class entitled, Out of our Minds: Tales from the Comics Experience.

The 76-page trade paperback contains 12 stories, covering a wide range of genres and styles -- from tales of the heart's longing, heroism, and high adventure to stories of emerging madness, darkness, and apocalypse.

The stories were written by Comics Experience alums Paul Allor, Alexander Bagnara, Luke Barnett, Kevin Byrne, Blake Campbell, Matt Dursin, Janine Frederick, Ian Hewlett, Don McMillan, Dwain C. Pruitt, Steve Schultz, and Timothy Shanahan, many of whom are also members of the Comic Creators Workshop.

The book features artwork by Monica Combs, Silvio dB, Ian Dorian, Bec Eakett, J.C. Grande, HdE, John Hunt, Leandro Panganiban, Borch Penya, Mark Louie Vuycankiat, and Comics Experience art alum and workshop member Ken Frederick.

Comics Experience writing alum and Creators Workshop member, Marta Tanrikulu, has had her second comic story published in the Poe Twisted anthology being put out by Red Stylo Media.

The anthology contains 13 tales of horror inspired by Edgar Allan Poe's stories and poetry.

In "Zombie Cruise," a bio-medical thriller written by Marta Tanrikulu with art by Mark Mullaney, trouble and plague break out on a Hawaii-bound cruise ship. The story is based on the Poe tale, "The Oblong Box."

The digital version, which includes exclusive content, is available now via several sites and the printed trade paperback will release on August 21, 2011.
