Thanksgiving

It’s Thanksgiving today and I’m taking a break from the blog for a few days but thought I’d quickly check in and say a few things relating to comics that I’m thankful for:

Comics themselves. Who knows who or how the medium was really created, but I wonder what my life would be like without it. Comics as a whole have been a wonderful edition to my life, something I can enjoy in passing but also enjoy studying and reading over and over again.

My job in comics. I love editing comics and writing them, but what I love about editing is working with creative people. I get so much energy and inspiration from the creators I work with, that my life and work is a happier one from them.

Writing comics. I love writing comics. I’m still a young writer and I’m learning so much with each new script, and I love learning, so I’m happy for writing comic scripts.

Friendships through comics. (This list is in no particular order, so don’t feel bad if you’re a friend and you’re reading this down on the list!) Looking back on my wedding just over five years ago, I’m amazed by how many comics professionals came to my wedding and how many who couldn’t, sent their best wishes. That was a really fantastic experience. And then again, when I decided to leave a job where I was in a position to hire a lot of people, I didn’t know what to expect from freelancers (were they really just my friends because I could give them work?) Turns out that in 99 out of 100 cases, they were friends because we were friends. And that was truly amazing to me.

I’m thankful for Comics Experience, a teaching/learning program where I get to meet, interact, and exchange ideas with the next generation of comics creators. I’m thankful for the students and the experiences I’ve had with Comics Experience.

All in all, I can’t complain about anything at all in my life. I’m very lucky, especially in today’s economy, to have not only a job, but a job (or three) that I genuinely enjoy.

I wonder if there’s a comics spirit somewhere. If there is, I hope he/she/it is thankful for some of the work I’ve done in the medium. That would be cool…
